KHI Insight: Don’t Be a Slave to a Trend

Let’s talk trends. From fashion to interiors, the products available to us in any given year are influenced by trends. Colors and finishes can represent a specific place in time, right? Orange shag carpet, stainless steel appliances, whitewashed furniture? I know you can think of many more examples. Some stand the test of time, while others come and go…or return as retro chic.

Based on our motto of “the who that defines the what,” we like to dig deep into what you truly love before we let you commit to a specific trend. If you can’t imagine your life without a particular color in it…and it happens to be in vogue, then we say go for it. However, if you feel like that mood will pass and move onto the next latest and greatest thing, then we suggest a strategy. One that allows you to enjoy the fad, yet not become a slave to the trend.

Here are some of my thoughts on a few trends:

Trend #1: Blush
Do you think everything is pretty in pink? As you already may know, I love my pink drinks. However, I don’t know that I am personally committed to a blush décor. A great way to infuse a space with a trending color such as blush is to play with it on pillows and throws. These accessories are great accents in any room. They add a touch of comfort and are a great way to slip a little pink into your palette. When the blush fad fades you can easily swap these items with what’s next.

Perhaps culinary-inspired shades like Cappuccino and Chili Pepper? That is what we hear will be on trend next year.

Trend #2: Navy
While navy has been trendy recently, I view it as a classic color. If you love navy, by all means use it in your décor. If there is a possible move in your future, however, you may want to pause before committing to a bold statement like, say, navy kitchen cabinets. Perhaps a navy sofa is a safer choice in this instance? A sofa is a bigger commitment than accent pillows and you can take it with you when you move!

Here are a few of my favorite navy inspired decors.

Trend #3: Reclaimed Wood
Reclaimed wood has been a desirable material for quite some time. You see it in restaurants, hotels, homes…everywhere these days. If I am going to be honest, I think it is a little overdone …and on its way out. Again, if your life won’t be the same without it then that is what we will do because why? You are “the who that defines the what.” However, if you are just getting around to working it into your décor to “keep up with the Joneses” then maybe we should get ahead of them and use an innovative material that will make them envious.

When it comes to new, unique materials for accent walls, consider copper, concrete tiles or even one of the many options in what we can call the new era of wallpaper.

Trend #4: Gray & White
Are you a leader or a follower? We have been led into a world of gray and white. Everywhere really. It has become “the” neutral color combination. Just like reclaimed wood, are you about to catch up to the gray and white world? Are you finally following? Or are you over it? Pause for a moment and think about how much you love this color combination. It is popular, there is no doubt about that. Just think about if it will make you happy long term.

If you are not sure, consider these alternative neutral backdrops.

1,2,3 and 4 that is enough trends to chat about for now, but you can be sure there will be more. Stay tuned!
